By including smolt farming in the project it will be possible to reduce the carbon footprint of the production process, as it will not be required to transport hathery long distances over land as was originally planned.

Location and Operations of the Smolt-station

Since the evaluation report for the planned construction was finalized the change has been made that the developer has now added a smolt-station to be used in future farming operations.

By including a smolt-station in the project it will be possible to reduce the carbon footprint of the production process, as it will not be required to transport hatchery long distances over land as was originally planned.

It can also be assumed that the probability of smolt mortality will be reduced, which would have occurred during shipping. Furthermore the company sees opportunities in utilizing excess water coming to the Vestmannaeyjar municipality, which would otherwise go to waste in municipal water tanks’ overflow.

The company Strandvegur 104 ehf. plans on constructing 13000 m2 housing located by the harbor.

In total the smolt-station will cover 8500 square meters.

RAS

The RAS system in the freshwater station uses biofilters to clean the station´s water for reuse. But the waste generated in the process is cleaned from the stations sewage system and is used for land reclamation and restoration of vegetation cover.

Maximum reuse of water also means that the temperature fo the water in the station can be controlled, thus aachieving:

  • Rapid growth
  • Very low risk of disease
  • Healthy fry that will grow well in the continued grow out site in Viðlagafjara.

Salmon farming requires very little fres water per kg. produced. The Zero Water Concept solution in the smolt-station minimizes water consumption.

AKVA Group is the provider of our RAS systems. They are well known for designing sustainble recirculating aquaculture systems in the world.
